Project Centre wins Abu Dhabi airport parking contract

The Project Centre has been appointed by the Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) to help improve parking facilities in one of the world’s fastest growing airports.

With a 40% increase in passenger traffic since April 2007, and a $6.8 billion expansion programme, ADAC has appointed Project Centre to draw up plans to ensure that Abu Dhabi International Airport’s parking and internal transit operations keep pace with the ambitious plans to triple the number of passengers using the airport to 20 million by 2011.

Project Centre’s expertise will be used to formulate improvements to existing parking facilities at Terminal 1 as well as how to manage the increasing demand for parking in the longer term.

Initially, Project Centre will consider how to create greater capacity for passenger parking. This will include relocating staff parking and car hire parking facilities from the Terminal 1 car park. This will involve planning additional transport links for the relocated car rental facilities and staff car park. In addition, plans for new car parks will be drawn up which will service a new passenger terminal that will accommodate the rapid growth in air traffic to Abu Dhabi.

Mark Raisbeck, Project Centre’s managing director said: ‘We are delighted to be invited to help in this exciting project. Project Centre’s expertise in parking and transport planning is ideally suited to help manage the rapid growth of this flagship airport.’

Project Centre’s parent company, NCP Services, has been appointed by the Abu Dhabi Department of Municipal Affairs to deliver the city’s pay parking scheme – described as the ‘biggest parking project in the world’.

Work is underway on a new terminal at the airport, to open later this year. Once completed, the airport’s three terminals will have an approximate capacity of 12 million passengers per annum. It is expected that passenger numbers will reach this level in 2011.

Development work has also started on a major new passenger terminal, to be situated between the two runways and known as the Midfield Terminal. Upon completion in 2012, the Midfield Terminal will take the airport’s passenger capacity to more than 20 million per year.

The current $6.8 billion master plan aspires to raise the Airport's passenger capacity to up to 20 million passengers by the end of 2011, when Phase 1 of the new Midfield Terminal is scheduled to be completed.

Other major components of the Master Plan include a second runway, a new air traffic control tower, a new cargo complex, and a duty free zone.
